Indigo-Dyed Sappakama Pants
The Versatile "Sappa-Kama": Traditional Tohoku Pants for Nimble Movements
The traditional workwear of Tohoku, the "Sappa-Kama" (monkey pants), was designed for agile movement, much like its namesake. These versatile pants were cherished in Tohoku's agrarian lifestyle, serving as essential attire for mountain work, farming, and even as casual loungewear, similar to monpe. Characterized by a loose fit around the hips and a tapered design from the calves to the ankles, the Sappa-Kama was crafted for ease of movement and efficient footwork in rugged terrains.

The unique design of Sappa-Kama (monkey pants), rarely seen today, was created to support the active lifestyles of the past, incorporating thoughtful features for maximum comfort and mobility. Its appeal goes beyond its traditional use, offering functionality and comfort that align with modern living. Inspired by this timeless charm, Kyoya Dye Works crafted the "SAPPAKAMA" to bring these qualities to contemporary life.
A Perfect Fit for Your Body, Lightweight for Effortless Movement
SAPPAKAMA features a relaxed fit from the waist through the thighs, paired with a tapered shape below the knees. Similar to harem pants, the extra room around the seat allows for unrestricted leg movement, ensuring maximum comfort and ease of motion. Through repeated prototyping, we’ve perfected a design that balances functionality with a flattering silhouette, making it both practical and stylish.
The calf area of the SAPPAKAMA features a unique design inspired by traditional sappa-kama, with triangular gussets that enhance fit, ease of movement, and comfort. While the design may appear simple at first glance, it’s constructed through intricate 3D tailoring that combines multiple fabric pieces. This craftsmanship showcases the skill and dedication of our artisans.
Ease of Wear and Practicality Combined
The waistband is made with elastic for easy on and off, and the fit can be adjusted by tying the drawstring, following the traditional design of the sappa-kama.
There are two large side pockets and one back pocket. The pockets are spacious enough to easily hold a mobile phone or wallet, making it convenient for a hands-free outing.
Dyed in our own factory
Indigo dye, also known as "Japan Blue," is one of the most familiar colors in Japanese life.
Though indigo may seem like a luxury item today, it was once a common color, with many households owning an indigo vat (aiga-me) and regularly re-dyeing clothes as part of everyday life. It was a color deeply rooted in the daily lives of the people.
Like denim, indigo dye offers the joy of aging over time. Each piece fades uniquely, allowing the wearer to create a one-of-a-kind item through wear. And when the color fades, you can always re-dye it to enjoy a fresh look, making indigo dye a truly versatile and enduring choice.
There are two types of indigo dyeing: natural indigo, made from plants, and synthetic indigo, commonly used in denim. Both have their unique appeal.
Natural indigo creates a deep, earthy hue, while synthetic indigo is more affordable and easier to apply to dark colors.
At Kyoya Dye Works, we use synthetic indigo to offer high-quality, accessible products that can be worn and enjoyed for years. When the color fades, simply re-dye to keep enjoying your garment.
Important Notes:
Due to the nature of indigo dyeing, slight color variations may occur. We hope you’ll enjoy these unique characteristics as part of the garment's charm.
Important Notes:
As each piece is hand-dyed, slight variations in color may occur between products.
A Natural Blend of Cotton and Linen
SAPPAKAMA is made from an undyed cotton-linen canvas, offering a natural, neutral tone with a mid-weight texture. This ensures opacity even in its light, unbleached state. The fabric is treated with dyeing and washing processes that enhance its surface, resulting in a subtle, organic texture and natural creases.
The combination of cotton and linen—both natural fibers—creates a material that becomes softer and more comfortable with each use, gradually conforming to the body for a perfect fit.
Undyed cotton-linen showcases the fibers’ raw, natural beauty, reflecting the plants it is derived from. Its production involves minimal chemical treatments, reducing environmental impact. This makes it an ideal choice for Kyoya Dye Works, a brand committed to creating tools that blend seamlessly into everyday life.
Care Notes
Please note that undyed fabric retains its natural character, which may lead to slight variations in color or small imperfections during the dyeing process. We carefully inspect our products to ensure quality, but minor inconsistencies inherent to the fabric’s natural origin are considered part of its charm and authenticity. Thank you for your understanding.
"Using what is available" — A traditional Tohoku craft embedded in the "saki-ori" loop
The loop at the back of the neckline is made from "saki-ori," a woven fabric created from leftover material during production. It symbolizes Tohoku's respect for resources and can be used as a hook to hang items. *Note: Since it's made from leftover fabric, the color of the saki-ori may differ from the photos.
