Our Story: Over 100 Years of Legacy
A Century of Dyeing Tradition in Ichinoseki

Kyoya Dye Works has been a proud part of Ichinoseki, a historic castle town in southern Iwate, for over 100 years. This region is deeply rooted in Japan's cultural heritage, with traditions like Hiraizumi's Pure Land Buddhism, a wealth of local performing arts, and a thriving history of traditional crafts.

One of Iwate's most iconic traditions is the Shishi-Odori (Deer Dance), a folk performance where people don animal-like costumes and rhythmically dance to the beat of drums, stomping the ground in tribute. Originating as a way to honor and thank hunted animals, this dance embodies the essence of Iwate's identity: gratitude and reverence for nature.
For generations, Kyoya Dye Works has supported these vibrant traditions by crafting costumes for Iwate's rich array of folk performances. We see our work not just as garment production but as a way to sustain the spirit of our community's festivals and cultural heritage.
What We Offer
-
Crafting Clothing for a Life Connected to Nature
The clothing we create isn't just attire—it's a thoughtful tool for daily life. Inspired by the wisdom of generations before us, our garments are designed to be durable, functional, and mindful of how they embrace the body. By combining traditional ingenuity with modern functionality, we craft pieces meant to be worn and cherished for years to come.
-
Dyeing That Honors Both People and Nature
We blend tradition with sustainability, using natural dyes from plants, minerals, and local materials, alongside safe, eco-friendly reactive dyes. This approach lets us "borrow the colors of the land," crafting textiles that embody Iwate's natural beauty with care and gratitude.
-
Timeless Materials for Timeless Designs
We carefully select materials like cotton and linen—natural fibers that become even more beautiful with time. Wherever possible, we use natural accents such as wooden or shell buttons, creating functional and elegant garments.
-
Sustainable Craftsmanship for Generations
Our mission is to craft products that endure, honoring both durability and harmony with nature. By respecting the environment and creating thoughtfully, we aim to preserve this legacy of making for the next 100 years and beyond.

Kyoya Dye Works and the "En nichi" Brand
At the heart of Iwate's festivals is a deep respect for nature. We created the En nichi brand to pass down this tradition and opened a lifestyle shop in the Satoyama region. Using Kyoya Dye Works' century-old techniques, we craft comfortable, sustainable clothing and offer repair services. We also promote eco-friendly practices by using discarded plants for dyeing. Our shop celebrates harmony between people and nature, featuring locally crafted goods and products designed to minimize environmental impact.
