Across the Tohoku region, diverse types of workwear were crafted, each shaped by unique natural conditions and cultural influences.

These garments, known as "nora-gi" (fieldwear), were tools of everyday life: durable, flexible, and comfortable to wear. At Kyoya Dye Works, we explore the functional beauty of Tohoku's traditional workwear and update it for modern living, creating "wearable tools" that align with our ethos of thoughtful craftsmanship.

The Hakama-Style Pants draw inspiration from the practicality and aesthetic elegance of traditional nora-gi. Designed with contemporary lifestyles in mind, they embody the concept of "future fieldwear"—easy to wear and timeless in appeal.

Workwear Reimagined: Hakama-Style Pants

In the Tohoku region, the diverse natural conditions and rich cultural heritage gave rise to a wide variety of workwear. These garments were tools for everyday life—durable, comfortable, and designed for ease of movement.

At Kyoya Dye Works, we draw inspiration from the functional beauty of Tohoku's traditional workwear to create modern, updated "wearable tools" that meet the needs of today while honoring the past. This is the heart of our design philosophy.

Hakama-Style Pants are inspired by the functionality and aesthetic appeal of traditional workwear. Designed as "workwear for the modern age," they combine timeless practicality with contemporary comfort, making them an easy and versatile choice for today’s lifestyle.

A wide silhouette designed for ease of movement, just like traditional hakama

This time, we focused on the traditional hakama. Unlike the form-fitting design of sappa-kama, these pants feature a relaxed silhouette, offering the comfortable feel of loungewear.

The Hakama Pants feature a wide-leg design while maintaining a balanced, not overly loose silhouette.

Adjustable Waist with Tie Belt

The waistband is designed without elastic, offering an adjustable fit with a tie belt.

Pulling the tie belt allows you to easily cinch the waist.

IN or OUT, Your Choice

The deep rise of the Hakama-Style Pants allows for a perfect fit when the belt is fastened at waist height, just above the hips. Its high-waisted design lets you tuck in your top for a sleek, stylish look.

Tuck your top into the pants for a sleek and fashionable appearance.

If you leave the top out, it creates a more casual look.

Durable organic cotton denim fabric

The fabric is made from eco-friendly organic cotton denim, gentle on both nature and people. It can be comfortably worn for anything from casual wear to work attire.

The organic cotton denim fabric is a non-washed material, chosen to develop and improve with wear. While it may feel stiff initially, the fabric becomes softer and more comfortable the more you wear it.

Equipped with large pockets

The pants feature two large side pockets and one back pocket.

Hakama Features: Crotch Gusset for Enhanced Mobility

We incorporated a crotch gusset based on the traditional "hakama" design from Tohoku. This gusset enhances the pants' ease of movement, making them even more comfortable to wear.

"Using what is available" — A traditional Tohoku craft embedded in the "saki-ori" loop

The loop at the back of the neckline is made from "saki-ori," a woven fabric created from leftover material during production. It symbolizes Tohoku's respect for resources and can be used as a hook to hang items.

*Note: Since it's made from leftover fabric, the color of the saki-ori may differ from the photos.
