The Versatile "Sappa-Kama": Traditional Tohoku Pants for Nimble Movements
The traditional workwear of Tohoku, the "Sappa-Kama" (monkey pants), was designed for agile movement, much like its namesake. These versatile pants were cherished in Tohoku's agrarian lifestyle, serving as essential attire for mountain work, farming, and even as casual loungewear, similar to monpe. Characterized by a loose fit around the hips and a tapered design from the calves to the ankles, the Sappa-Kama was crafted for ease of movement and efficient footwork in rugged terrains.
The unique design of Sappa-Kama (monkey pants), rarely seen today, was created to support the active lifestyles of the past, incorporating thoughtful features for maximum comfort and mobility. Its appeal goes beyond its traditional use, offering functionality and comfort that align with modern living. Inspired by this timeless charm, Kyoya Dye Works crafted the "Sappakama" to bring these qualities to contemporary life.
A Perfect Fit for Your Body, Lightweight for Effortless Movement
Sappakama features a relaxed fit from the waist through the thighs, paired with a tapered shape below the knees. Similar to harem pants, the extra room around the seat allows for unrestricted leg movement, ensuring maximum comfort and ease of motion. Through repeated prototyping, we’ve perfected a design that balances functionality with a flattering silhouette, making it both practical and stylish.
The calf area of the Sappakama features a unique design inspired by traditional sappa-kama, with triangular gussets that enhance fit, ease of movement, and comfort. While the design may appear simple at first glance, it’s constructed through intricate 3D tailoring that combines multiple fabric pieces. This craftsmanship showcases the skill and dedication of our artisans.
Ease of Wear and Practicality Combined
The waistband is made with elastic for easy on and off, and the fit can be adjusted by tying the drawstring, following the traditional design of the sappa-kama.
There are two large side pockets and one back pocket. The pockets are spacious enough to easily hold a mobile phone or wallet, making it convenient for a hands-free outing.
Five understated colors that are easy to match with any style
The Sappakama comes in five color options: "Indigo," "Natural," "Khaki," "Gray," and "Black." These subtle colors make it a versatile piece for everyday wear. Whether you're going for a casual or slightly more polished look, you can enjoy a variety of outfit combinations for different occasions.
Please Note
Due to the dyeing process, there may be slight variations in color between individual products.
(Example) For instance, there may be color variations like this in the khaki. Please understand.
A fabric with a natural texture made of cotton and linen
Sappakama is made from a cotton-linen canvas fabric in the natural "unbleached" color. The medium-weight fabric is not see-through, even in its natural color. The fabric is dyed and washed to give it a natural texture, with slight surface wrinkles and creases. Because it's made from cotton and linen, the fabric becomes softer and molds to your body with use over time.
The unbleached fabric has a natural texture that reflects the plant fibers from which it is derived. Additionally, it undergoes minimal chemical treatment, making it an environmentally friendly choice. This type of fabric aligns perfectly with our philosophy at En-nichi, creating tools that enhance everyday life. The fabric composition is 52% cotton and 48% linen.
Note:
Although the unbleached fabric showcases natural textures, there may be slight color inconsistencies or fading during the dyeing process due to the inherent characteristics of the raw plant fibers. We inspect for any noticeable defects, but minor color variation or fading due to the fabric's natural characteristics may occur, which is considered part of its charm. Please be aware of this when purchasing.
"Using what is available" — A traditional Tohoku craft embedded in the "saki-ori" loop
The loop at the back of the neckline is made from "saki-ori," a woven fabric created from leftover material during production. It symbolizes Tohoku's respect for resources and can be used as a hook to hang items.
*Note: Since it's made from leftover fabric, the color of the saki-ori may differ from the photos.
