TENUGUI - Mountain - Traditional Japanese Cotton Towel
TENUGUI - Mountain - Traditional Japanese Cotton Towel
In Japan, the tenugui—a slender cotton cloth—has served as a wipe, head wrap, gift wrap, wall-hanging and good-luck charm for centuries. Slip one into your bag when you travel or head to an event and you’re ready for sudden spills, strong sun, or an impromptu picnic. Because tenugui have long been used in Shinto rituals, many people still carry them as small talismans that “ward off misfortune and invite good fortune.”
Our TENUGUI – Mountain is woven from bun-momen cloth on shuttle looms in the Chita Peninsula of Aichi. The yarns are left unbleached, giving the fabric a warm, natural hue. The slightly open weave drinks up moisture, dries quickly, and grows progressively softer with use—perfect for everyday life.
The motif pays homage to the mountains that surround Iwate. From afar they appear gentle, yet step inside and steep ridges rise before you—every peak and fold believed to shelter its own deity. Our pattern captures those overlapping silhouettes, hand-printed one sheet at a time by craftsmen. Edges are left unhemmed, the traditional finish that speeds drying and keeps the cloth hygienic. Size approx. 32 × 100 cm; 100 % cotton. Minor variations in colour or pattern are part of the hand-printing process and a mark of its character.

About TENUGUI
Wiping, wearing, wrapping, covering, decorating, gifting—TENUGUI, Japan’s traditional everyday cloth, has long been put to work in every corner of life, from the home to the job site. Slip one into a bag or pocket when you’re traveling or at an event and you’ll be ready for any unexpected need. Because TENUGUI have also played a role in Shinto rituals, people say they ward off evil and invite good fortune, serving as a handy good-luck charm as well.
Soft “Bun”-Weave Fabric

These TENUGUI use Bun-weave cotton cloth woven on shuttle looms in the Chita Peninsula of Aichi Prefecture, a region famed for cotton textiles since the Edo period. The slow shuttle-loom process puts little stress on the yarn, giving the fabric a gentle, supple hand. To preserve the cotton’s natural hue, the cloth is left unbleached, resulting in a warm, off-white tone.
Among TENUGUI fabrics, Bun weave uses slightly thicker yarns and a looser weave, so it absorbs sweat and water easily, dries quickly, and is ideal for everyday use. It also grows softer and molds to your skin the more you use it.
